Location
Throughout Maryland
Scope
Multi-year, multi-phased ADMS implementation at 124 distribution stations
Background
One of WYE’s largest customers wanted to upgrade their SCADA system from the antiquated 1980s software to the modern technology. The outdated system was more susceptible to cyberattacks and terror threats. It was also a proprietary communication system, meaning that the manufacturer produced the equipment specifically for this customer’s applications and products. Therefore, it was difficult to get the old system linked with the current, standardized communication equipment.
Solution
WYE is upgrading, testing, and certifying the SCADA system at all 124 distribution stations to meet the standard communication protocols. To help solve the design issues that inevitably come when upgrading antiquated systems, we brought in an on-site consultant that specializes in SCADA & communications work. This enabled us to address the issue efficiently and effectively on the spot.
Results
The new SCADA system allows information to flow with higher bandwidth and more reliably. It is less susceptible to cyberattacks, and it also saves the customer time and money in the future for troubleshooting, testing, and expansion. Ultimately, it benefits the community by providing more reliable power, with less risk of outages from cyberattacks and storms.
